Family-run Craigavon transport and logistics company, Manfreight, is set to open a new £14 million chilled storage facility in Belfast.

The 50,000-square-foot facility is located in Belfast Harbour and is backed by a significant funding package from HSBC UK. This marks the first purpose-built warehouse to be constructed in Northern Ireland in over 25 years.

The facility’s location is strategically close to key transport networks and Belfast’s major ferry terminals, which will help reduce overall food transportation distances. The hub, which will employ 30 people, has been built to high sustainability standards, featuring 1,890 rooftop solar panels.

Manfreight’s Managing Director, Chris Slowey, highlighted the importance of the new facility: “HSBC UK’s funding has helped us create a top-tier facility that will ensure our continued success for the next 50 years. This new warehouse is crucial for driving growth and strengthening our relationships with key customers.”

Construction of the facility began in April 2023, following planning approval in September 2022. The project was led by Newry-based contractor Felix O’Hare.

Marty Colvin, Relationship Director at HSBC UK, expressed enthusiasm for Manfreight’s progress: “It’s been great to support Manfreight as they make significant and innovative changes to their business. We’re excited to be part of their journey.”

Michael Robinson, Director at Port of Belfast, praised the investment: “Manfreight’s new facility shows their confidence in the local agri-food and distribution sectors, as well as the strategic advantage this location provides. The logistics market has evolved over the past decade, with a growing demand for modern, energy-efficient facilities. This new warehouse perfectly meets that demand, located ideally within the harbour estate near the ferry terminals.”

He added, “With over 500,000 square feet of modern logistics space already developed in this area, it’s clear that the market values the economic benefits of being close to the port and ferry terminals.”
